Development of a Questionnaire to Evaluate Turnover and Retention in the IT Work Force: Art or Science

In order to evaluate turnover and retention in the Information Technology (IT) Work Force (ITWF) we developed a tailor made questionnaire that addresses specific job and organizational design factors of importance to IT workers. Early analyses show the questionnaire to be reliable and valid. However, because some companies complained about the length of the questionnaire, we decided to develop a short version of the questionnaire. In this paper we discuss the steps taken to develop the short version of the questionnaire, the criteria used to shorten the questionnaire, and the consequences for validity and reliability of the short questionnaire.
